Araucaria araucana aka Monkey Puzzle Tree

Taxonomy

Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, piñonero, pewen, or Chilean pine, is a stately evergreen tree native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. With a trunk diameter of 1-1.5 m and reaching heights of 30-40 m, it is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. This unique tree, often referred to as a living fossil due to its resemblance to ancient species, boasts sharply pointed, triangular dark green leaves that adorn its branches. Mature trees may bear cones on the upper branches, with male and female cones typically found on separate trees. The monkey puzzle tree has become a popular garden plant, thanks to its irregular, prehistoric-looking features such as massive arching branches and symmetrical growth patterns. It is also recognized as the national tree of Chile. However, its conservation status was changed to Endangered by the IUCN in 2013 due to population decline caused by logging, forest fires, and grazing. The name Araucaria is derived from the Chilean Arauco Province, and the age of its fossilized cones, found in sedimentary rocks, is estimated to be 100-200 million years. In its natural habitat, this remarkable tree can reach heights of up to 80 feet (24 m).

How to care for Monkey Puzzle Tree

Difficulty

Monkey Puzzle Tree presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Monkey Puzzle Tree should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Monkey Puzzle Tree loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Monkey Puzzle Tree thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Chilean Pine.

Toxicity

There is no verified data on the toxicity of this plant in the records of Ploi. If any person, including yourself, a family member, or a pet, consume plant material with an uncertain toxicity level, it is advisable to seek the advice of a healthcare expert.

Humidity

No extra humidity is necessary for the Monkey Puzzle Tree. Absorption of water by plants is primarily done through their roots, and soil watering is the most effective method to provide humidity to your plants.

Fertilizer

Repotting the Monkey Puzzle Tree should be done either when it has doubled in size or on a yearly basis, whichever occurs sooner. Fresh potting soil with all the required nutrients, refreshed annually, will provide the plant with all the necessary sustenance, making the use of fertilizer unnecessary. Keep in mind that plants receive their energy from the sun, not fertilizer.

Growth-pattern

Monkey Puzzle Tree grows vertically and new growth emerges from the top of the plant.

Region of origin

Monkey Puzzle Tree’s native range is South America and Oceania.
