Asplenium fontanum aka Fountain Spleenwort

Asplenium fontanum is an evergreen fern in the Aspleniaceae family. Its common names include smooth rock spleenwort and rock spleenwort. The RHS lists its range across central and southern Europe into central Asia. It also records the species as native to Britain and Ireland. The name Asplenium halleri is a synonym for this species.

This small fern grows in a compact clump. Its narrow, lance-shaped blades have finely divided foliage. The divided leaves give the plant a light, lacy look. Its leaves stay green through all four seasons. Garden plants reach about 0.3–1.6 feet (0.1–0.5 metres) in height. Their spread falls within the same range. The RHS gives two to five years as the time to maturity. Its modest size suits spaces where larger plants would crowd nearby growth.

Grow this fern in loose soil that drains well. The RHS lists loam, sand and chalk as suitable soils. It prefers a neutral or alkaline pH. Partial shade is the main position given for garden use. It can also grow in full sun with more moisture. Choose a sheltered site rather than an exposed spot. North-, east- and west-facing sites are among the listed options. Its evergreen leaves provide foliage interest beyond the main growing season. Its form and scale make it useful in low-maintenance planting.
