Native to central and eastern Europe, this herbaceous perennial is highly popular in gardens. It forms mounds of mid-green leaves and reaches a height of up to 90 cm (35 in) with a breadth of 45 cm (18 in). During the summer, it produces dark red-purple flowers that are surrounded by maroon bracts.
