Taxonomy

Brunfelsia pauciflora, also known as the Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Plant, is a species of semi-deciduous shrub in the nightshade family, endemic to Brazil and grown in cultivation as an ornamental. It is a perennial shrub growing up to 3m (10 feet) with a 3.6m (12 feet) spread. The species name, bonodora, comes from the Latin and means ‘sweet-smelling’, an apt description for this fragrant plant's ever-changing blushed blooms that go from deep purple to lavender, to white as they mature. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit due to its heavy spring/fall blooming with possible repeat blooming any season under favourable conditions. Commonly cultivated varieties include 'Eximia' with its larger blooms, small and floriferous 'Floribunda', and 'Macrantha' which has larger flowers without white throats.
