Buphthalmum salicifolium aka Yellow Ox Eye

Taxonomy

Buphthalmum salicifolium, also known as ox-eye, is a species of flowering plant in the aster family, Asteraceae. This compact perennial herb is native to Europe and can reach a height of 50 to 70 centimeters. It features an erect stem, which is purple-red in color, and willow-like leaves that are arranged alternately. The leaves vary in shape and size, with the lower ones being the widest and borne on petioles, while the upper leaves are narrow and lack petioles. The flower head, solitary at the top of the stem and branches, consists of yellow ray florets with 2 to 4 teeth at the tips, surrounded by tubular yellow disc florets at the center. The plant produces a fruit called a cypsela, which is accompanied by a pappus of scales. This beautiful plant blooms with vibrant yellow flowers measuring 6 centimeters across, starting from early summer. Notably, Buphthalmum salicifolium was given to medal winners at the European Championships Munich 2022.

How to care for Yellow Ox Eye

Difficulty

Yellow Ox Eye presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Lighting

Yellow Ox Eye thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Yellow Oxeye Daisy.
