Cleome aka Beeplant

Taxonomy

Cleome, also known as spider flowers, spider plants, spider weeds, or bee plants, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cleomaceae. It was previously classified under the family Capparaceae but DNA studies have revealed its closer relationship to the Brassicaceae. The genus includes approximately 170 species of herbaceous annual or perennial plants and shrubs, with a distribution spanning tropical and warm temperate regions worldwide. However, recent research has suggested merging Cleome with related genera Podandrogyne and Polanisia, resulting in a larger Cleome genus comprising around 275 species. Cleome is of particular interest for the study of C4 photosynthesis evolution, as it demonstrates a transition from C3 to C4 photosynthesis. Morphological variations associated with this transition include differences in leaf structure and the presence of proteins required for C4 photosynthesis. In addition to its scientific significance, Cleome is also valued for its attractive palmate leaves and clusters of white flowers that bloom from summer to autumn. Cleome dodecandra, a rare houseplant, requires regular watering and thrives in direct light within 1 foot of a window. Well-draining soil and organic fertilizer during the peak growing season are recommended for optimal growth.

How to care for Beeplant

Water

Beeplant should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Beeplant loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Beeplant requires abundant, bright, and direct light to thrive. The best placement for this plant is within one foot of a window to ensure it receives enough light. If you live in an area with more extreme weather, such as hot summers or cold winters, you may need to adjust the placement of the plant accordingly. During hot summer months, it is important to place the plant away from full sun, as this can cause the leaves to yellow or burn. During cold winter months, it is best to move the plant closer to the window to take advantage of the extra light that can help it survive. By keeping an eye on the current weather in your area, you can make sure your Cleome Dodecandra is always in the right place to thrive.

Toxicity

Ploi lacks confirmed information on the toxicity of this plant. If you, a relative, or your pet accidentally consume plant material with unknown toxicity, it's best to consult a medical expert.

Growth-pattern

New growth will sprout from the top of the Beeplant as it grows vertically.
