Columnea hirta aka Goldfish Plant

Columnea hirta produces long trailing stems covered in red hairs and reaches a maximum height of approximately 0.91 m (3 ft), though in a hanging basket context spread is more relevant than height. Growth is moderately paced under good care conditions.

Columnea hirta is endemic to Costa Rica and Panama in Central America. In the wild it is epiphytic, growing attached to the bark of trees in humid tropical forest rather than in soil.

Use a well-drained, moderately fertile growing medium. For this epiphytic species, a peaty or bark-based mix that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely is appropriate. Avoid heavy or compacted substrates. Note that calcium buildup from hard tap water can cause leaf browning — use distilled or rainwater where possible.

Columnea hirta is a tropical species suited to average to warm indoor temperatures. It is hardy only in frost-free USDA zones 11–12. Cold drafts should be avoided, as they cause leaf drop. Temperatures below about 10 °C (50 °F) are harmful.

High, constant humidity is important for healthy growth. Low humidity leads to leaf drop. Misting, pebble trays with water, or placement near a humidifier helps recreate the plant's naturally humid epiphytic habitat.

Reduce watering for six to eight weeks in winter to simulate a mild dry season, which typically triggers a flowering response. Resume normal watering and feeding once buds begin to appear. Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts at any time of year.

Flowers are tubular, orange to red-orange, approximately 8 cm (3.1 in) long, and produced profusely. Under suitable indoor conditions, flowering can occur throughout the year. The vivid coloring and tubular form are classic adaptations for hummingbird pollination.

Two intraspecific varieties are recognized: Columnea hirta var. hirta (the nominate variety) and Columnea hirta var. mortonii ((Raymond) B.D. Morley).

Common pests of Columnea include aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Fungal issues such as botrytis (grey mould) and fungal leaf spots can occur, especially with poor air circulation or excessive leaf wetness. Mosaic virus has also been reported. Preventive measures include avoiding wetting foliage, ensuring good airflow, and inspecting new plants before introduction.

Leaf drop is most commonly triggered by cold drafts or sudden drops in humidity. Keep the plant away from air conditioning vents, open windows in cool weather, and heating units that produce dry air.

Browning of leaf tips or edges in Columnea can result from calcium buildup in the growing medium from hard tap water. Using distilled or rainwater reduces this risk. Dry air can also cause tip burn.

Columnea hirta produces tubular orange-red flowers that are morphologically adapted for hummingbird pollination — the primary pollination mode across the genus. Research on Columnea section Angustiflorae (Schulte et al. 2015) has demonstrated that pollinator interactions are a key driver of diversification within the genus.

Columnea species are commonly propagated from stem-tip cuttings taken in spring or summer, rooted in a moist peat-based or bark-based medium under warm, humid conditions.
