Coronilla valentina aka Shrubby Scorpion Vetch

Taxonomy

Coronilla valentina, also known as the shrubby scorpion-vetch, scorpion vetch, or bastard senna, is a dense and rounded evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean Basin. It can reach a height and width of 80 cm (31 in) and is adorned with bright green leaves consisting of up to 13 leaflets. This species produces clusters of small, fragrant, and brilliant yellow flowers during spring and summer, which are followed by slender pods. Interestingly, Linnaeus noted that the flowers emit a remarkable fragrance during the daytime but lack scent at night. While it is fairly hardy in cultivation, Coronilla valentina prefers Mediterranean conditions, including shelter and warm sunshine. One notable subspecies, C. valentina subsp. glauca (syn. C. glauca), along with its cultivar 'Citrina', has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. With its vibrant blooms and evergreen foliage, this species adds beauty and fragrance to gardens and landscapes.
