Cyperus congestus aka Dense Flat Sedge

Cyperus congestus looks like grass but belongs to the sedge family, Cyperaceae. It is a perennial: it lives for more than one year. It is native to southern Africa. Records place it in South Africa and Namibia. They also list Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and KwaZulu-Natal. The RHS lists it as non-native to Britain and Ireland. People gather it from the wild for food and materials. Some grow it for its looks. Yet few details tell us how to grow it.

The plant forms a group of stems above a swollen base. This base has a bulb-like shape. A lasting rhizome lets the plant grow again. In its first year, it may look like an annual.
