Cyphostemma currorii aka Butter Tree

Taxonomy ID: 2960

Cyphostemma currorii is a succulent shrub or small tree. It belongs to Vitaceae, the grape family. Common names include butter tree and cobas tree. Its range runs from southern Angola into northwestern and west-central Namibia. It grows in hot, dry places, among rocks and on steep slopes. In Namibia, it occurs on the Brandberg and around Karibib. Trade in these swollen-stemmed plants may threaten wild populations.

The plant grows slowly and has a thick, water-storing trunk. Its shape recalls a small baobab. Most plants reach about 3–10 feet [1–3 metres] tall. Some reach 20 feet [6 metres] or more. These larger sizes are not a stated garden norm. The trunk has yellow to orange bark. Thin flakes peel away and reveal a green layer beneath. This bold trunk gives the plant value as a specimen. It can grow in the ground or in a greenhouse.

The large, fleshy leaves have three leaflets on long stalks. Their bright green edges have uneven teeth. The tree stands bare for much of the year. In its native range, leaves occur from October to May. Plants lose their leaves from June to September. New leaves emerge between October and December. Small flowers range from cream to yellow-green. Records from habitat note blooms in October, December and March. These records cover only a few plants in each month. Clusters of berries turn red and resemble grapes. Fruit ripens from October to April, most often in December.

Grow it in rich potting mix that drains fast. A cactus mix suits plants grown in pots. Outdoors, sandy or loamy soil needs very good drainage. It tolerates drought but benefits from water during summer growth. Some summer feeding also helps. Keep it dry in winter to reduce the risk of rot. Too much water can kill the plant. In wet areas, large pots allow a move under shelter.

Mature plants may withstand about -3°C when conditions suit them. Still, avoiding frost is safest, above all for young plants. It tolerates heat up to 40°C. Afternoon shade can limit leaf scorch in hot climates. It also suits outdoor growing in Mediterranean climates. Wet winters are less suitable, though plants may survive them.

More information about Butter Tree

How difficult is it to take care of Butter Tree

With its straightforward care requirements, Butter Tree is a hassle-free plant that anyone can enjoy.

What are the water needs for Butter Tree

Butter Tree does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

What is the sunlight requirement for Butter Tree

Butter Tree thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Kobas Grape.
