Cypripedium reginae aka Queen Lady's Slipper
Taxonomy
Cypripedium reginae, commonly known as the showy lady's slipper, pink-and-white lady's-slipper, or the queen's lady's-slipper, is a rare and beautiful orchid native to northern North America. This deciduous plant, reaching a height of around 60cm, features oval, bright green leaves that are prominently veined and hairy, measuring 10-25cm in length. During late spring and summer, this orchid produces stunning white flowers, up to 5cm long, with a pouched white-streaked pink lip. These flowers can appear either individually or in groups of two to three. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, Cypripedium reginae has disappeared from much of its historical range, making it a symbol of conservation efforts. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the state flower of Minnesota.

Queen Lady's Slipper, Showy Lady's SlipperHow to care for Queen Lady's Slipper
Difficulty
Caring for Queen Lady's Slipper can be demanding, requiring a deep understanding of its unique needs and a commitment to provide optimal care.
Water
Queen Lady's Slipper should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Queen Lady's Slipper loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Queen Lady's Slipper prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Dormancy
During the wintertime, it's common for Queen Lady's Slipper to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.

Queen Lady's Slipper grows vertically and new growth emerges from the top of the plant.
