Cystopteris fragilis aka Brittle Bladder Fern

Taxonomy

Cystopteris fragilis, also known as brittle bladder-fern or common fragile fern, is a clump-forming, deciduous fern that can be found worldwide in shady and moist areas. It typically grows up to 20cm tall, with upright rhizomes and tufts of lance-shaped pale, grey-green fronds reaching lengths of up to 45cm. The fronds have segments that are sharply pointed at the tips. This fern is commonly found in cracks and crevices of cliffs, rock outcrops, rocky slopes, banks, and ravines, usually in shade. It is a variable species, but certain characteristics can help identify it, such as fronds not exceeding 14 inches in length, absence of hairs, scales, or glands on the pinnae or upper stem, slightly smaller lowest pinnae pair compared to the second lowest, and presence of sori on most fronds in a row about midway between the pinnule midvein and edge, without indusia when mature. Locally, it is harvested from the wild for various purposes including food, medicine, and as a source of materials.

How to care for Brittle Bladder Fern

Difficulty

Are you up for a challenge? Brittle Bladder Fern will test your gardening skills and require extra care and attention to thrive.

Water

Brittle Bladder Fern should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Brittle Bladder Fern loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Brittle Bladder Fern prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Ploi does not possess verified information regarding the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event that you, a member of your family, or a pet ingests plant material with an unclear toxicity level, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a medical professional.

Growth-pattern

The Brittle Bladder Fern is a clumping species, with new growth arising from the soil surrounding the parent plant.

Region of origin

Brittle Bladder Fern’s native range is Cosmopolitan, found in most areas of the world, including Britain, but only on mountains in Tropics.
