Delairea odorata aka German Ivy

Taxonomy

Delairea odorata, also known as Cape ivy or German ivy, is a twining perennial plant native to South Africa. It belongs to the family Asteraceae and is classified within the tribe Senecioneae. Previously included in the genus Senecio as Senecio mikanioides, this evergreen vine has fleshy, glossy leaves with 5-7 shallow lobes. It can grow up to 3 meters tall and has a rapid growth rate, making it a popular choice for ground cover and hanging baskets. Cape ivy is characterized by its smooth vines, green leaves, and clusters of small, yellow flowerheads that bloom in autumn and winter. However, its invasiveness has led to it being considered a weed, and it is now rarely cultivated. This fast-growing vine can quickly spread and overtake other plant life, forming a dense blanket of vegetation. In the UK, it is often grown as a houseplant.
