Dendromecon rigida aka Tree Poppy

Taxonomy

Dendromecon rigida, also known as bush poppy or tree poppy, is a shrub or small tree native to California and Baja California. It can reach heights of up to 3 meters and has blue-green, ovate leaves that are 5-10 cm long. From late spring to early autumn, it produces an abundance of slightly fragrant, bright yellow flowers that are 5-7 cm wide. This plant is found in various habitats, including the foothills of the California Coast Ranges, Klamath Mountains, southwest Cascade Range, western Sierra Nevada, Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges, and northern Baja California Peninsula. It thrives in dry slopes and washes, particularly in areas that have recently experienced a fire. Dendromecon rigida is an evergreen shrub with narrow lanceolate leaves that are more than three times as long as they are broad. The leaves have finely toothed margins and a leathery texture. The solitary and terminal inflorescences produce flowers with four satiny yellow petals and numerous free stamens. After pollination, the petals and two sepals are shed. The cylindric fruits are dehiscent from the base and measure 5-10 cm in length. The smooth, brown or black seeds have a small pale outgrowth. Overall, Dendromecon rigida is a vibrant and resilient plant that adds beauty to its natural habitats.
