Elaeagnus macrophylla aka Broadleaf Oleaster
Taxonomy
Elaeagnus macrophylla, also known as the broad-leaved oleaster or oleaster, is a vigorous, wide-spreading evergreen shrub native to eastern Asia, particularly Korea and Japan. This substantial plant can reach heights of 4 meters and widths of 8 meters. When young, its round glossy leaves are silvery, gradually becoming glossy dark green as they mature. In autumn, the shrub produces clusters of heavily fragrant cream flowers, followed by edible oval red fruit in late spring or early summer. The branchlets of Elaeagnus macrophylla are covered in silvery-white scales, distinguishing it from other members of the genus. This ornamental plant is popular in gardens and is also known by its former name, Elaeagnus × submacrophylla or Elaeagnus × ebbingei, which is a hybrid between E. macrophylla and E. pungens.
