Eleocharis acicularis aka Needle Spike Rush

Taxonomy

Eleocharis acicularis, also known as needle spikerush least spikerush, is a widespread species of spikesedge found across Europe, central and southeastern Asia, North America, northeastern South America, and possibly introduced in Australia. This evergreen, perennial sedge can grow as a marginal water plant or submerged in water up to 40cm deep. It has long, grasslike stems that reach heights of about 15 centimeters, although it can be shorter in bog conditions. The plant produces short spikes of tiny flowers with lanceoloid spikelets, each less than five millimeters in diameter. Eleocharis acicularis thrives in marshes, vernal pools, and bogs. In artificial aquatic environments, it is sold commercially as an aquascape plant and requires plenty of light and a high concentration of carbon dioxide. As a houseplant, Needle Spikerush is rare and needs regular watering. It does best in direct light, preferably within one foot of a window, and prefers well-draining soil. The specific epithet "acicularis" refers to its needle-shaped appearance.

How to care for Needle Spike Rush

Water

Needle Spike Rush should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Needle Spike Rush loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Needle Spike Rush requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Needle Spike Rush will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
