Erysimum aka Wallflower

Taxonomy

Erysimum, commonly known as wallflower, is a diverse genus of flowering plants in the Brassicaceae family. With over 150 species, it encompasses both popular garden varieties and various wild forms. Some taxonomists also include the genus Cheiranthus within Erysimum. These plants belong to a monogeneric cruciferous tribe called Erysimeae, characterized by their star-shaped or two-sided trichomes, vibrant yellow to orange flowers, and siliques with multiple seeds. Wallflowers can be evergreen perennials with an upright, bushy growth habit and dark green, narrow leaves. From spring to summer, they produce clusters of fragrant bright yellow flowers that gradually fade to a near-white hue at the center. These plants can be annuals, herbaceous perennials, or sub-shrubs. The perennial species are relatively short-lived and are often treated as biennials in cultivation. Typically, the stems of Erysimum are erect and somewhat winged, covered in bifid hairs, and measure around 25 ± 53 cm × 2–3 mm. They also possess t-shaped trichomes. The leaves are narrow and sessile. The genus name Erysimum originates from the Greek word 'Eryo,' meaning to drag.

How to care for Wallflower

Difficulty

Wallflower is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Lighting

Wallflower requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Wallflower will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
