Eupatorium capillifolium aka Dog Fennel

Taxonomy

Eupatorium capillifolium, also known as dogfennel or dog fennel, is a North American perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to the eastern and south-central regions of the United States. This upright plant can reach heights between 50 cm and 2 meters, with multiple stems branching out from a sturdy base. The stems and base are adorned with leaves that are so finely divided, they resemble branching green threads in intricate fractal patterns. However, when crushed, the leaves and flowers emit an unpleasant odor. The leaves of Eupatorium capillifolium are bright green and intricately divided, with each leaf division measuring less than 1mm in width. The flowers, which are dull pinkish-white and relatively insignificant, may not even have a chance to bloom before frost cuts the plant back. Despite this, Eupatorium species, including E. capillifolium, are grown as ornamental plants, particularly in Asia. These perennials produce long-lasting flowerheads that range in color from purple to white. While they can bloom from late spring, their main blooming period occurs in late summer. The tall stems and vibrant blooms attract butterflies and bees, making them a delightful addition to any garden. One notable American species is E. maculatum Atropurpureum Group AGM, commonly known as Joe-Pye weed, which can grow taller than 2m. Another variety, E. capillifolium 'Elegant Feather', reaches a height of 1.5m and features feathery foliage that turns reddish brown as the season progresses. However, this particular variety usually does not produce significant flowers during its blooming phase.

How to care for Dog Fennel

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Dog Fennel due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Dog Fennel should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Dog Fennel loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Dog Fennel thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Sneeze Weed.

Toxicity

Dog Fennel is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Growth-pattern

Dog Fennel grows vertically and new growth emerges from the top of the plant.

Region of origin

Dog Fennel’s native range is Eastern N. America - New Jersey to Vancouver, south to Florida.
