Fallopia baldschuanica aka Chinese Fleecevine

Taxonomy

Fallopia baldschuanica, also known as Russian-vine, Bukhara fleeceflower, Chinese fleecevine, mile-a-minute, and silver lace vine, is a vigorous, woody, twining deciduous climber. Native to Asia, including China, Russia, and Kazakhstan, it is now found growing wild in parts of Europe, North America, and Central America as an introduced species. Some authors differentiate Chinese populations as Fallopia aubertii and Russian and central Asian species as F. baldschuanica. This ornamental plant is grown for its flower-laced vines, with decorative white flowers that attract bees and provide nectar and pollen. It is often used as cover for unsightly fences and garden structures due to its fast-growing nature. However, it can become invasive. The plant features heart-shaped dark green leaves and produces panicles of tiny pink-white flowers in summer, followed by small pink fruits. Ideal for covering dull spots in the garden, Fallopia baldschuanica is a blooming and eye-catching bush. It serves as a great companion for flowerbeds during the summer months, attracting bees and beneficial insects. Originating from Western China, it is known by various names and is frequently used in landscaping for its long leaves and fragrant flower bouquets, which can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm). The plant spreads rapidly, with its vines reaching up to 36 feet (11 meters), often requiring isolation from other plants in the garden.

How to care for Chinese Fleecevine

Difficulty

Chinese Fleecevine presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Chinese Fleecevine should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Chinese Fleecevine loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Chinese Fleecevine thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Silver Lace Vine.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Chinese Fleecevine to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.
