Firmiana simplex aka Chinese Bottle Tree

Taxonomy

Firmiana simplex, also known as the Chinese parasol tree, Chinese parasoltree, or wutong (Chinese: 梧桐; pinyin: wútóng), is a medium to large-sized deciduous tree in the Malvaceae family, native to Asia. It can grow up to 16-20 meters tall and has smooth, brownish or light yellow bark. The leaves are alternate, deeply dissected into 3-5 pointed lobes, and can grow up to 35 cm long and 45 cm wide. The tree blooms in July with small greenish-yellow, dioecious flowers collected in paniculate apical inflorescences up to 35 cm in size, which attract bumblebees and Giant Mason Bees. The fruit is a composite five-membered leaflet 3-10 cm long, cracking before the seeds ripen, with grayish-yellow, spherical, edible, tasty and oily seeds about 1 cm in diameter. A flowering tree varies in fragrance with weather and time of the day, having a lemony odor with citronella and chocolate tones. Chinese parasol trees are often grown as ornamental plants in warm regions of North America, but they can become weedy due to seedlings and are considered invasive in some southern states. A tall, stately specimen grows in the botanical garden in Florence, Italy. It propagates by seeds and begins to bloom and bear fruit in the sixth to eighth year of its life.

How to care for Chinese Bottle Tree

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Chinese Bottle Tree due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Chinese Bottle Tree should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Chinese Bottle Tree loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Chinese Bottle Tree thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Chinese Parasoltree.
