Gentiana alba aka Yellow Gentian

Gentiana alba, or white prairie gentian, belongs to the gentian family. This perennial comes from central and eastern North America. Its range runs from Manitoba and Ontario south to Oklahoma. It also reaches Arkansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina. In Missouri, it grows on rocky prairies and wooded slopes. It also occurs on ledges, limestone glades, and open woodland sites.

The plant has an upright form with unbranched stems. It often stands about 2 feet [0.61 metres] tall. Listed garden dimensions reach 3 feet [0.91 metres] in height. The spread reaches about 2 feet [0.61 metres]. Its light yellow-green leaves grow mostly without stalks. They have an oval to lance-shaped outline. Leaves reach about 0.25 feet [0.076 metres] in length. The stems bear flowers at their tips and upper leaf joints.

The flowers face upward and have five petals. Each forms a tube about 0.125 feet [0.038 metres] long. Clusters hold two to seven flowers. Their white colour may have a yellow or green tint. Missouri Botanical Garden gives August to early October for bloom. Chicago Botanic Garden lists a broader July to October season. The pale blooms provide a late-season display in garden borders. Chicago also notes that the plant draws birds and butterflies.

Grow this gentian in sun or partial shade. Full sun can give the best flower display. Yet strong summer sun may bleach the leaves. Some afternoon shade suits it where summers bring heat. It grows in average soil with good drainage and moderate moisture. For best growth, use moist soil rich in humus. A gravelly soil can suit it if drainage stays good. It tolerates slight alkalinity and some dry soil. Cool summers suit it better than hot, humid ones. Missouri Botanical Garden lists USDA zones 3–7; Chicago lists 3–6. Plants often struggle in areas warmer than zone 7.

Use it in rock gardens, native plantings, or border fronts. Chicago also lists it for specimen planting and ground cover. Its upright stems and pale blooms suit these garden roles. Missouri Botanical Garden rates its upkeep as medium. It reports no major insect or disease concerns. Even so, summer heat and humidity can make garden growth difficult. This limits its ease of care in the St. Louis area.
