Gypsophila elegans aka Showy Baby's Breath

Gypsophila elegans is an annual plant in the carnation family. Gardeners know it as annual baby's breath or maiden's breath. Its native range runs from southern Ukraine to western and northern Iran. It grows beside roads and on ground disturbed by people. These sites often have sandy or rocky soil. The plant grows fast from seed and matures within one year.

Plants stand upright and branch into a loose, bushy shape. Most reach 1–2 feet (0.3–0.6 m) tall in gardens. RHS gives a wider height range, reaching 3.3 feet (1 m). Spread reaches about 1.6–2 feet (0.5–0.6 m). Thin green stems may carry a pale, powdery coating. The smooth leaves range from grey-green to blue-green. They grow in opposite pairs and have plain, unbroken edges. Each leaf is narrow, with a pointed or strap-like shape. Lower leaves clasp the stems.

Small flowers form open clusters above the leaves on fine stalks. Each star-like bloom usually has five petals. White is the main colour, but pink flowers also occur. NCSU places flowering from spring into early summer. RHS describes a summer display, so timing varies between sources. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers for nectar. Brown capsules follow the blooms and contain many seeds. Each capsule opens in four sections to release its contents. The seeds are brown to black and shaped like kidneys.

Grow this annual in full sun and soil that drains well. It prefers sandy loam but accepts other well-drained soils. Neutral to alkaline soil suits it, with alkaline soil preferred. Some shade is possible, though it reduces the flower display. Plants tolerate some drought but also grow in moist soil. Avoid wet winter soil and sites that stay waterlogged. RHS assigns it the UK hardiness rating H5. Sow seed with a light covering of soil. Repeat sowing every three to four weeks until July extends flowering. Cutting plants back after flowering may bring another flush.

Use it in borders, containers, cottage gardens, or pollinator beds. The flowers suit fresh cutting and dried arrangements. Deer resistance adds to its value in garden planting. Watch for aphids, slugs, and snails despite its few pest problems. Wet conditions raise the risk of stem and root rot. Plants can escape gardens and grow in the wild. ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. Eating it may still cause vomiting or diarrhoea.
