Helichrysum petiolare aka Licorice Plant

Taxonomy

Helichrysum petiolare, commonly known as the licorice-plant or liquorice plant, is a trailing evergreen subshrub native to South Africa, where it is known as imphepho. It has also been naturalized in parts of Portugal and the United States. With furry grey-green leaves and small white flowers, this plant grows up to 45 cm (18 in) high and 150 cm (59 in) broad. It is also referred to as silver-bush everlastingflower, trailing dusty miller, and kooigoed. While it emits a faint licorice aroma, it is not closely related to the true liquorice plant. Another cultivar, 'Limelight,' features lime-green, woolly leaves and dull cream flower-heads. The licorice plant, although not edible, is favored by gardeners for its frosted, felt-like leaves and spreading growth habit. It can serve as a groundcover or trailing plant for containers. However, it should be noted that the species is considered invasive in some regions where it is perennial.

How to care for Licorice Plant

Difficulty

Licorice Plant is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Water

Licorice Plant should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Lighting

Licorice Plant requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Licorice Plant will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
