Heliconia rostrata aka False Bird Of Paradise

Taxonomy

Heliconia rostrata, also known as the hanging lobster claw or false bird of paradise, is a large herbaceous perennial plant found in El Salvador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and naturalized in Puerto Rico. Unlike other heliconias that grow upright, this unique plant has downward-facing flowers that provide a source of nectar to birds. It is highly valued for its vibrant and unusual inflorescences, featuring bright red bracts with yellow and green tips, along with yellowish-white flowers. Growing up to 2m in height, it has banana-like leaves and blooms in spring and summer. Often used as a specimen in tropical gardens, Heliconia rostrata is a host flower for many birds, particularly hummingbirds. In Bolivia, it is recognized as the national flower, alongside the Kantuta flower. When cultivated in pots, it starts blooming at a height of 4-5' and continues to produce stunning inflorescences one after another. In ideal conditions of full to partial sun and slightly acidic, well-draining soil, it can reach heights of 10-15' when grown directly in the ground. This impressive plant was observed in all its glory at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the Big Island, creating a breathtaking spectacle for all to behold.
