Kniphofia aka Redhot Poker

Taxonomy

Kniphofia, also known as tritoma, red hot poker, torch lily, or poker plant, is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Asphodelaceae. First described as a genus in 1794, Kniphofia is native to Africa. These herbaceous perennials have linear strap-like leaves and produce spikes of sulphur-yellow tubular flowers during the summer and autumn. The plants are known for their upright, brightly colored flowers that rise above the foliage, coming in shades of red, orange, and yellow, often with bicolored blooms. These flowers are a source of nectar and attract bees, sunbirds, hummingbirds, and New World orioles. The genus is named after Johann Hieronymus Kniphof, an 18th-century German physician and botanist. Some popular species of Kniphofia cultivated as garden plants include K. galpini, K. northiae, K. rooperi, and K. thomsonii.

How to care for Redhot Poker

Difficulty

If you're an experienced gardener looking to push your limits, Redhot Poker will provide you with a rewarding and challenging experience.

Lighting

Redhot Poker thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Redhot Poker.
