Koelreuteria bipinnata aka Goldenrain Tree
Taxonomy
Koelreuteria bipinnata, also known as Chinese flame tree, Chinese golden rain tree, or Bougainvillea golden-rain tree, is a species of Koelreuteria native to southern China. This spreading, deciduous tree can grow up to 8m tall and has large, 2-pinnate leaves composed of opposite pairs of finely toothed, oval leaflets. In late summer, it produces red-spotted yellow flowers in pyramidal clusters up to 30cm long, followed by unusual, inflated, pink or red-flushed fruit capsules. It is one of the few trees that bloom in summer and can live for 50 to 150 years. The leaves are green, turning yellow in the fall, and measure between 5-10 cm long. The flowers are small, yellow with a touch of red at the base, and have a pleasant fragrance. They bloom from July to August, and sometimes in September in middle Europe. The fruit is a three-lobed inflated papery capsule that is 3-6 cm long and contains several hard, nut-like seeds. The bark is thin and brown. The branches are upright growing, but may bend down as the tree grows and may require pruning for proper structure and clearance. Overall, this tree is a fine specimen with showy flowers and is best suited to areas with hot summers. However, it is important to note that it is characterized as a weak wooded tree.
