Linum aka Flax

Taxonomy

Linum, also known as flax, is a genus comprising around 200 species within the Linaceae family. These plants are found in temperate and subtropical regions across the globe. The well-known common flax (L. usitatissimum) belongs to this genus and is cultivated for its bast fibers used in linen production and its seeds used for linseed oil. The flowers of most Linum species display shades of blue or yellow, with occasional occurrences of red, white, or pink, and some species exhibit heterostyly. A typical boll contains an average of 6 to 10 seeds. Certain Lepidoptera larvae, including those of the cabbage moth, nutmeg, setaceous Hebrew character, and Coleophora striolatella, feed on Linum species. One specific Linum species is a dwarf, semi-evergreen sub-shrub that forms a compact mound reaching a height of 15cm. It boasts small, oval-shaped grey-green leaves and produces bright yellow flowers in terminal clusters, measuring up to 2.5cm in width.

How to care for Flax

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Flax due to its easy-going nature.

Lighting

Flax thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Flax.
