Lobelia spicata aka Balespike Lobelia

Lobelia spicata is known as pale-spiked lobelia or pale spike. This short-lived perennial herb belongs to the bellflower family. It grows wild across central and eastern North America. Its range includes parts of Canada and the United States. Wild plants grow in fields, meadows, glades, and thickets. They also occur in dry ground with sandy soil. The species is not native to Britain or Ireland.

The plant grows upright and can exceed 2 feet [0.61 metres]. A single slim green stem supports the flowers. Fine hairs cover the stem near its base. Higher up, the stem becomes smooth, with ridges or angles. Green leaves grow in turn along the lower stem. Each leaf is narrow or shaped like a slim egg. Leaf edges are smooth or have a few spaced teeth. The plant sheds its leaves rather than keeping them year-round.

Small white or pale blue flowers form a narrow raceme. Chicago Botanic Garden lists flowering from May through August. Each tube-shaped flower has two lips and five lobes. Two lobes form the upper lip, and three form the lower. A dark blue or purple stigma curves down at its tip. Seed capsules follow the flowers and mature in fall. They split open and release tiny seeds to the wind. The plant draws hummingbirds, other birds, and butterflies.

Grow it in full sun or part shade. It can also cope with deep shade and rocky ground. Rich loam with good drainage suits it best. Keep seedlings in soil that stays moist. Older plants accept moist to slightly dry soil. Published hardiness ranges differ: NC State gives USDA zones 3–8. Chicago Botanic Garden lists zones 4–9. Use small groups in native gardens, meadows, beds, or borders. It also suits slopes and areas left to grow naturally. Care needs are low, and seed is a propagation option.

NC State reports no known insect pests or diseases. Drought can make lower leaves yellow and drop. Excess water or fertilizer can make stems fall over. No food uses are known, and the plant is poisonous. Its leaf and stem sap is toxic to small mammals. Eating plant parts can cause sickness, weakness, and severe nervous symptoms. Historical uses include leaf tea that causes vomiting and external washes. These records do not establish safe use.
