Mammillaria beneckei

Taxonomy ID: 10904

Mammillaria beneckei is a small cactus in the Cactaceae family. It comes from western and central Mexico. Its range includes Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Guerrero. It grows in dry woodland, desert, and dry shrubland. Wild plants remain widespread and abundant across much of their range. Dams in Jalisco have flooded some local groups. Collectors grow this species as an ornamental pot plant.

Young plants start with one stem, then form basal offsets. These build clumps about 1.6 feet (0.5 metres) wide, sometimes more. Each stem reaches 0.16–0.33 feet (0.05–0.10 metres) tall. Stem width ranges from 0.16–0.23 feet (0.05–0.07 metres). The rounded stems have flattened tops and lengthen with age. Their colour ranges from green to brownish green, often with purple tones. Soft, cone-shaped tubercles cover the stems and may turn red or purple. Their bases hold little wool and few, if any, bristles.

Each spine cluster has 12–15 fine radial spines. These are white or yellow, with darker tips. Two to six brown or black central spines stand among them. One or two longer central spines have hooked ends. The flowers have a narrow tube and a flat, spreading face. Most are deep yellow, though some are orange. They reach about 0.10 feet (0.03 metres) across, or slightly more. Flowers appear sparingly and have a short life. They open at night and close for good around noon. Slender red fruits widen into a club shape near the tip. The dark brown seeds have a rough surface.

Use a neutral cactus mix that lets water drain freely. Pots need good drainage, as excess water can cause rot. Water well during active growth, without keeping the mix too wet. Keep the plant dry through winter and reduce water in larger pots. Summer feeding can use a fertiliser rich in potassium. Frost poses a serious risk, and winter warmth improves success. The suggested resting temperature is 8–12°C.

Plants can fill a large pot within a few years. Older clumps need broad, shallow pots as they spread. Growers can raise new plants from seed or detached offsets. Let cut surfaces dry before placing offsets on soil. Protect young seedlings from full sun while they develop.

More information about Mammillaria beneckei

How difficult is it to take care of Mammillaria beneckei

Mammillaria beneckei presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

What is the region of origin of Mammillaria beneckei

Mammillaria beneckei’s native range is the Southwestern United States, Central America, and the Caribbean.

What are the water needs for Mammillaria beneckei

Mammillaria beneckei does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

What is the right soil for Mammillaria beneckei

pH: Neutral
When it comes to the Mammillaria beneckei, a potting soil that is too moist can cause problems. For this reason, it's important to use a soil mix that is well-draining and does not retain too much moisture. A soil that includes perlite or vermiculite for drainage and organic matter for nutrition is ideal. You can achieve this by simply adding a few scoops of perlite to your store-bought cactus soil.

What is the sunlight requirement for Mammillaria beneckei

Mammillaria beneckei thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Mammillaria beneckei.

What's the right humidity for Mammillaria beneckei

Mammillaria beneckei enjoys dry environments, but misting the plant or providing extra humidity can create an environment for harmful fungi to thrive on the leaves.

How to fertilize Mammillaria beneckei

The growth of Mammillaria beneckei is not rapid and it doesn't necessitate any extra fertilization. By replacing its potting soil once a year, it should receive ample nutrition. It is important to note that plants obtain their energy from the sun's rays, not from fertilizers.

Is Mammillaria beneckei toxic to humans/pets?

Ploi's records do not contain confirmed information on the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event of accidental ingestion of plant material with questionable toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.

What seasonal care does Mammillaria beneckei need?

During the wintertime, it's common for Mammillaria beneckei to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.
