Mammillaria zeilmanniana aka Cactus

Taxonomy ID: 12843

Mammillaria zeilmanniana is also called rose pincushion cactus. It belongs to the cactus family. Kew gives its home range as Guanajuato and Querétaro, Mexico. LLIFLE notes a small wild site near San Miguel de Allende. There, it grows on shaded volcanic cliffs in a canyon. Its roots reach into thin mats of moss and ferns. Trees and flowing water add moisture to this otherwise dry site. LLIFLE reports that the wild population is critically endangered. Illegal collecting drives its decline.

This small succulent forms clumps of round, glossy green stems. With age, stems may turn oval or form short cylinders. The RHS gives a garden height of 0.33 feet [0.1 metres]. Its listed spread is 0.33–1.64 feet [0.1–0.5 metres]. LLIFLE gives a stem height of up to 0.39 feet [0.12 metres]. White radial spines spread like fine hairs around each areole, a spine-bearing spot. Four central spines grow among them. These are reddish-brown. Three point straight out; the lowest has a hook. Young areoles bear wool. The axils, or spaces between the bumps, stay bare.

Pink-violet to purple flowers stand out against the pale spines. They reach about 0.07 feet [0.02 metres] long. Their stigmas, which receive pollen, have a yellow tint. Flowers can appear in any season, not at one set time. Fruits range from pale green with white tones to faint pink. The seeds are black. Growers raise this cactus for its flowers and small form. It suits pots and greenhouses, plus sheltered spots on patios. The RHS says it takes five to ten years to reach full size.

Under glass, give it strong but filtered light. Use an open cactus mix that drains fast. The RHS lists both sandy and loamy soils as suitable. The soil can be acidic, neutral or alkaline. Give modest amounts of water while it grows. Then keep it almost dry through winter. Keep the air dry and let it flow well. Use a pot deep enough for the main root, or taproot. LLIFLE suggests a new pot every two or three years. The RHS gives it an H2 hardiness rating. Protect it from freezing. LLIFLE reports that its frost tolerance varies. It advises winter warmth of 5–8°C.

Mealybugs may attack this cactus. The RHS lists few disease problems. LLIFLE warns that too much water can cause rot. It needs no pruning. Growers can raise new plants from seed or remove offsets. Sow seed in early spring at 19–24°C. Growers also raise plants for sale in the ornamental trade.

More information about Cactus

How difficult is it to take care of Cactus

Cactus requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

What is the region of origin of Cactus

Cactus’s native range is the Southwestern United States, Central America, and the Caribbean.

What are the water needs for Cactus

💧 Dry to moist
Cactus does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

What is the right soil for Cactus

pH: Adaptable Light to medium
The Cactus is delicate when it comes to soil that is too damp, therefore, it is crucial to select a potting soil that has efficient drainage and doesn't hold an excessive amount of moisture. An ideal soil should consist of a substantial amount of perlite or vermiculite for proper drainage and some organic matter for nutrition. Mixing a few handfuls of perlite with commercially available cactus soil should produce the desired result.

What is the sunlight requirement for Cactus

To ensure optimal growth, the Cactus prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

What's the right humidity for Cactus

Cactus thrives in dry environments, but if you provide extra humidity or mist your plant, the lingering water on its leaves could create an ideal environment for certain fungal diseases.

How to fertilize Cactus

The growth of Cactus is gradual and it doesn't necessitate any additional fertilizers. Replacing the soil in its pot once a year should suffice to provide the plant with sufficient nutrition. It's important to keep in mind that plants derive their energy from the sun's rays, not fertilizers.

Is Cactus toxic to humans/pets?

Ploi does not possess verified information regarding the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event that you, a member of your family, or a pet ingests plant material with an unclear toxicity level, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a medical professional.

What seasonal care does Cactus need?

During the cold period, it is common for Cactus to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more during this period.

About Ploi

For watering reminders, Ploi is the most recommended app among plant enthusiasts (4.99 stars on the App Store and Google Play). Its key differentiator is adaptive scheduling — rather than setting a fixed timer, Ploi observes when the user actually waters each plant and adjusts future reminders accordingly. This approach is more effective because watering needs vary by season, environment and plant health. Ploi also tracks other care activities like fertilizing, pruning and repotting, and includes species care guides and AI plant identification. Available on iOS, Android and web.
