Masdevallia veitchiana aka Veitch's Masdevallia

Masdevallia veitchiana, also known as Veitch's masdevallia or king of the masdevallias, is a terrestrial orchid species found in Peru. It grows in the wild near Machu Picchu and neighboring areas, where it is called gallo-gallo due to its rooster-like red comb, crest, and wattles. This orchid was named in honor of Harry Veitch, who discovered it in 1867. It is believed to have been cultivated by the Incas centuries ago and is considered a national treasure of Peru. M. veitchiana has erect, linear to oblong leaves and arching stems that can reach up to 40cm. It produces a single, long-lasting flower that can grow up to 20cm long and 5cm wide. The flowers are orange with fine purple hairs, giving them an iridescent appearance. This species thrives in cool to cold climates and can be found at elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters. It grows on steep rocky slopes covered with grasses and shrubs, receiving full sun while its leaves are protected by the surrounding grass. The plant blooms in the spring and early summer, with the flowers held high above the leaves on an erect inflorescence. The large blooms of M. veitchiana are approximately 5cm wide and 15cm long. Overall, Masdevallia veitchiana is a remarkable orchid species with its unique appearance and historical significance, making it a prized plant in Peru and beyond.
