Megaskepasma erythrochlamys aka Brazilian Red Cloak

Taxonomy

Megaskepasma erythrochlamys, commonly known as Brazilian red-cloak, is a monotypic genus of plants native to Venezuela and other parts of South America. This evergreen shrub can grow up to 3 meters in height and width, with dense branching and oval leaves that measure up to 40cm long. The leaves are dark green with prominent veins and provide a tropical-looking effect throughout the year. From late summer into winter, and occasionally throughout the rest of the year, the shrub produces erect flower spikes that feature showy red bracts surrounding white, two-lipped flowers. The inflorescence of this ornamental shrub is particularly striking, with large erect heads of conspicuous crimson bracts. Brazilian red-cloak prefers a rich soil and can be propagated from either seed or cuttings. This frost-sensitive plant belongs to the Acanthaceae family, which also includes other eye-catching members such as Justicia carnea and Rhinacanthus beesianus.

Lighting

Brazilian Red Cloak thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure.
