Nicotiana tabacum aka Tobacco
Taxonomy ID: 941
Nicotiana tabacum, or cultivated tobacco, is an annually-grown herbaceous plant of the Nicotiana genus, originally from tropical regions. It is the most widely grown of all plants in the genus Nicotiana, and is believed to be a hybrid of Nicotiana sylvestris, Nicotiana tomentosiformis, and possibly Nicotiana otophora. Growing to heights of 1 - 2 meters (3' - 6'), the plant is now commonly grown all over the world for its leaves, which are commercially grown to be processed into tobacco. Tobacco is a rich source of the alkaloid nicotine and has a long history of use as a medicinal plant and social stimulant. It needs moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, and can generally be found in moderate elevations in the tropics, ranging from 800 - 1,800 metres. Originally used as chewing tobacco, later smoking tobacco varieties were selected, and modern varieties are often shorter, flowering during the day and with no fragrance.
