Pecteilis radiata aka Fringed Orchid

Taxonomy

Pecteilis radiata, also known as the white egret flower, fringed orchid, or sagisō, is a tuberous perennial orchid found in China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. It grows up to 40cm high with slender, upright stems and 3-7 linear, grass-like green leaves. The flowers are distinctively shaped, with a lower petal divided into a central elongated lobe and two fringed outer lobes, resembling a bird in flight. Each stem produces 1-3 flowers, sometimes up to 8, during the summer. It should not be confused with the North American species, white fringed orchid Platanthera praeclara. Notably, the Pecteilis radiata is the official flower of Setagaya ward in Tokyo.

How to care for Fringed Orchid

Difficulty

Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Fringed Orchid to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.
