Phaseolus coccineus aka Runner Bean
Taxonomy
Phaseolus coccineus, also known as runner bean, scarlet runner bean, or multiflora bean, is a plant in the legume family, Fabaceae. It originated from the mountains of Central America and is grown both as a food plant and an ornamental plant. It can grow to 3 m (9 ft) or more in length, and commonly has red flowers and multi-colored seeds (though some have white flowers and white seeds). It is sometimes called 'Oregon Lima bean', and in Nahuatl ayocotl or in Spanish ayocote. Consuming the bean as it is can be toxic due to the protein phytohaemagglutinin, so it is important to cook it properly before eating. TIt is also a rare houseplant that requires regular watering to thrive and prefers long-lasting, direct light less than 1 foot from a window. Runner Bean likes soil that is well draining, so it is advised that a gentle, organic fertilizer is supplemented during peak growing season. However, it is not safe to consume and should therefore be kept out of reach from children, cats, and dogs.

Runner Bean should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Runner Bean loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
Runner Bean thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Multiflora Bean.
