Phyllostachys edulis aka Tortoise Shell Bamboo

Taxonomy

Phyllostachys edulis, commonly known as mōsō bamboo or tortoise-shell bamboo, is a temperate species of giant timber bamboo native to China and Taiwan. It has also been naturalized in other regions, including Japan, where it is widely distributed. This bamboo can grow up to impressive heights of 28 meters (92 feet). Its Latin name, edulis, refers to its edible shoots, which are highly prized in warmer climates for consumption. With strong, evergreen canes that reach about 5-6 meters tall, this bamboo species features upright bright green culms that later turn dull yellow. Its narrow tapered mid-green leaves measure up to 10 centimeters in length. P. edulis is highly valued in the bamboo textile industry and is commonly used for rayon production in China and other countries. While it is less cold-hardy compared to other phyllostachys varieties, it can still survive down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15°C) at a reduced height.

How to care for Tortoise Shell Bamboo

Difficulty

Tortoise Shell Bamboo requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

Water

Tortoise Shell Bamboo should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Tortoise Shell Bamboo loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Tortoise Shell Bamboo prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
