Polypodium scouleri aka Leathery Polypody

Taxonomy

Polypodium scouleri, also known as leathery polypody, Scouler's polypody, coast polypody, and leather-leaf fern, is a species of fern native to coastal western North America. It can be found from British Columbia to Guadalupe Island off Baja California. This fern thrives in coastal habitats such as cracks on coastal bluffs, oceanside forests, and beach dunes, where it is exposed to heavy fogs and sea spray. It has a waxy, scaly rhizome that serves as an anchor. The triangular or oblong leaves of Polypodium scouleri can reach a maximum length of 85 centimeters and a width of 8 centimeters. Each leaf is composed of stiff and leathery segments with rounded tips and shallow, rounded teeth along the edges. The underside of the leaf segments is crowded with rounded sori, which contain the spores. As a houseplant, Leathery Polypody is slightly tender and evergreen. Its fronds are broadly ovate to triangular, leathery, thick, and glossy, with a dark green color. While it only grows to a height of around 30 centimeters, it can spread to form a clump over 1 meter wide under ideal conditions. Regular watering is essential for the thriving of this super rare houseplant, which prefers abundant sunlight and should be placed within 3 feet of a window. Well-draining soil is recommended, and repotting is necessary each time the plant doubles in size, eliminating the need for additional fertilizers.

How to care for Leathery Polypody

Water

Leathery Polypody should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Leathery Polypody loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Leathery Polypody prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.

Fertilizer

Repotting the Leathery Polypody is necessary either when it has doubled in size or once every year, whichever happens first. With fresh potting soil replenished annually, the plant will receive all the necessary nutrients, rendering the use of fertilizer unnecessary. Keep in mind that the source of a plant's energy is the sun, not fertilizer.

Growth-pattern

Leathery Polypody grows vertically and new growth emerges from the top of the plant.
