Quercus ilex aka Holm Oak
Taxonomy
Quercus ilex, also known as the evergreen oak, holly oak, or holm oak, is a large tree native to the Mediterranean region. With its black, finely cracked bark and massive rounded crown, it is a striking sight. This evergreen tree has glossy dark green, ovate leaves that are whitish underneath, creating a beautiful contrast with its young foliage and yellow catkins. The Quercus ilex is a versatile plant that can be easily grown and responds well to pruning, making it suitable for hedging or wind-breaks. If left to grow freely, it can reach heights of 40 to 70 feet (12 to 21 m) with a similar spread, developing a well-rounded head and low-hanging branches. Its bark is dark and cracked, earning it the common name of Holly Oak due to the resemblance of its leaves to those of the Holly tree (Ilex aquifolium).

Holm Oak, Holly Oak, Evergreen OakHow to care for Holm Oak
Difficulty
Caring for Holm Oak is a breeze, as it is highly adaptable and forgiving to minor neglect.
Water
Holm Oak should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Holm Oak loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Holm Oak prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Toxicity
There is no verified data on the toxicity of this plant in the records of Ploi. If any person, including yourself, a family member, or a pet, consume plant material with an uncertain toxicity level, it is advisable to seek the advice of a healthcare expert.
Fertilizer
The Holm Oak is characterized by its slow growth and doesn't need fertilization in addition to its potting soil. By renewing the soil in its pot once a year, it should have enough nutrition. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not from any fertilizers.
Region of origin
Holm Oak’s native range is Europe - Mediterranean. Occasionally naturalized in Britain in S. England[17].
