Quercus rysophylla aka Encino De Asta

Taxonomy

Quercus rysophylla, also known as the loquat leaf oak, is a Mexican species of oak found in the northeastern region of the country, specifically in the States of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, and Hidalgo. This evergreen tree can reach up to 20m in height and has elliptic to lance-shaped leaves that are wavy-edged, measuring about 2cm long and 8cm wide. In spring and sometimes summer, new leaves covered in downy hairs emerge with a reddish-purple color, later maturing into glossy, dark green leaves with prominent veins and a puckered appearance. The tree produces small, ovoid acorns of about 1-1.5cm in length after inconspicuous flowers. This variety of oak is particularly interesting due to its tough and leathery ovate foliage. The leaves are deep green with wavy margins and a rough texture. It is a fast-growing oak, well-suited for larger landscapes, and known for its adaptability. Loquat Leaf Oak prefers loose, slightly acidic soils. Its dark green foliage has lime green undersides and emerges with a coppery-bronze hue in spring. The oval leaves, which have serrated edges, maintain their dark green color throughout the winter. While neither the flowers nor the fruit have significant ornamental value, it should be noted that the fruit can create a mess in the landscape and may require occasional clean-up.

How to care for Encino De Asta

Difficulty

Encino De Asta is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Lighting

Encino De Asta requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Encino De Asta will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.

Dormancy

During the cold period, it is common for Encino De Asta to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more during this period.
