Reynoutria japonica aka Japanese Knotweed
Taxonomy
Reynoutria japonica, also known as Japanese knotweed or Asian knotweed, is a perennial plant in the Polygonaceae family. It is native to East Asia but has become an invasive species in North America and Europe. The plant has hollow stems with raised nodes giving it a bamboo-like appearance, and can grow up to 3-4 meters in height. The leaves are oval-shaped with a truncated base and the flowers are small and cream or white. Japanese knotweed is a prolific and invasive weed that dies back in the winter and rapidly produces shoots in early spring, outcompeting native species for space, light, and water. It is difficult to remove from the soil due to its vigorous rhizomes. Japanese knotweed is best grown in direct light and well-draining soil with regular watering and organic fertilizer throughout the growing season. It belongs to the Reynoutria genus and was historically known as Fallopia japonica.
Common names
Japanese Knotweed, Impossible To Kill Invasive Demon Plant, Asian KnotweedHow to care for Japanese Knotweed
Difficulty
Japanese Knotweed presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.
Water
Japanese Knotweed should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Japanese Knotweed loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Japanese Knotweed prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Toxicity
The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.
