Rhododendron anthopogon

Rhododendron anthopogon is a small evergreen shrub in the heath family, Ericaceae. Its native range spans the Himalayas and parts of western China. It grows in Nepal, Bhutan, India, and southern Tibet. Wild plants live on moist slopes, cliff ledges, and in thickets. They grow at about 9,840–14,760 feet [3,000–4,500 metres]. Some reach sites at 16,400 feet [5,000 metres]. This is not a native plant of Britain or Ireland.

In cultivation, this shrub reaches about 2 feet [0.6 metres] tall. Its spread is also about 2 feet [0.6 metres]. It keeps its leaves throughout the year. Flowers appear from April to May. Each flower has both male and female organs. Insects pollinate them, and seeds ripen from July to August. The supplied sources give no species-level flower colour or fruit description. They also give no details of its bark or leaf shape.

Grow it in moist, acid soil with good drainage. A soil pH of 4.5–5.5 suits it best. It prefers humus-rich ground without lime, rather than heavy clay. Peaty soil or a sandy loam can suit it. Avoid dry, arid ground. It can grow in sun or light woodland shade. In warmer climates, it needs more shade. PFAF lists USDA hardiness zones 6–9. Its separate UK zone 7 rating is not an RHS H-rating.

Its small size suits woodland gardens and shaded edges. Take care when choosing nearby plants, as its roots lie near the surface. Trees with shallow roots can compete with it. Ground covers, heathers, and herbaceous plants can also crowd its roots. Keep its root area free of weeds and competing growth. PFAF reports that plants tolerate transplanting because they form a root ball. The evidence names no specific pests or diseases for this species.

The flowers have a recorded use as a tea substitute. Dried leaves also serve as incense. In Nepal, people inhale steam from boiled leaves for coughs and colds. This records a traditional use, not proof of benefit or safety. PFAF gives the plant a low edible-use rating. It reports no confirmed toxicity specific to this species. It does raise a caution based on poisonous relatives. That warning does not establish whether this species is safe to consume. Treat the reported tea use with that uncertainty in mind.
