Rhododendron macrophyllum aka California Rose Bay
Taxonomy
Rhododendron macrophyllum, also known as the Pacific rhododendron, California rosebay, California rhododendron, coast rhododendron, or big leaf rhododendron, is a large-leaved evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Coast of North America. This species, which is the state flower of Washington, typically grows 2-4m tall and has an upright, branching habit. Its dark green leaves are elliptic and can reach up to 15cm in length. In late spring, Rhododendron macrophyllum produces clusters of 20 or more bell-shaped flowers in shades of rose pink, purple, and occasionally white, with yellow-brown speckles on the upper petals. The flowers, measuring about 3.5 cm wide or more, have five lobes on the corolla, and the plant may even become a small tree up to 25 ft tall when crowded. The leaves, which are simple and alternate, are 7.5-15 cm long and 3-8 cm wide, tapering at both ends. The flower clusters are terminal and can contain 20 or more blooms. Overall, this species showcases the beauty of broadleaf evergreen shrubs and adds a touch of color to the Pacific Coast landscape.

Difficulty
If you're looking for a plant that offers a moderate level of challenge, California Rose Bay is a great choice to test your gardening skills.
Water
California Rose Bay should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
California Rose Bay loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the California Rose Bay prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Toxicity
There is no verified data on the toxicity of this plant in the records of Ploi. If any person, including yourself, a family member, or a pet, consume plant material with an uncertain toxicity level, it is advisable to seek the advice of a healthcare expert.
Humidity
No extra humidity is necessary for the California Rose Bay. Absorption of water by plants is primarily done through their roots, and soil watering is the most effective method to provide humidity to your plants.
Fertilizer
The California Rose Bay is characterized by its slow growth and doesn't need fertilization in addition to its potting soil. By renewing the soil in its pot once a year, it should have enough nutrition. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not from any fertilizers.
Region of origin
California Rose Bay’s native range is Asia and North America.
