Rodgersia pinnata aka Rodgersia Pinnata

Rodgersia pinnata is a large perennial in the saxifrage family. Its native range runs from parts of China to Myanmar. In China, it grows in eastern Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou. Gardeners also call it featherleaf rodgersia or featherleaf rodgersflower. It grows from rhizomes and forms a spreading mound. Its leaves fall each year, leaving a seasonal gap in beds.

Plants reach about 3–5 feet [0.9–1.5 metres] tall when in flower. Their spread can reach about 5 feet [1.5 metres]. Missouri Botanical Garden gives a smaller upper size of 4 feet [1.22 metres]. Large leaves rise from the base of the plant. Each leaf has six to nine leaflets with a strong texture. These measure about 0.5–0.7 feet [0.15–0.20 metres] long. The leaves are pinnate, but their close-set leaflets can look palmate. The foliage takes on red-bronze tones in late summer.

Branched flower sprays rise above the mound of leaves. Their small flowers lack petals and range from cream-pink to red. RHS also records cream or pink flowers in summer. Missouri Botanical Garden gives June to July as the bloom period. Chicago Botanic Garden lists a broader May-to-August season. Its account notes that flowering can be sparse or unreliable locally. The large leaves remain a key feature without many blooms. Chicago also lists the plant as attractive to butterflies.

Grow it in rich soil with a steady supply of moisture. Light shade suits it well, though sources also allow full sun. RHS lists acid clay or loam as suitable soils. Shelter helps protect the plant from cold, drying winds. More shade lets it cope with somewhat drier ground. RHS rates its hardiness H6 and gives two to five years to maturity. Missouri Botanical Garden lists USDA zones 5–7; Chicago extends this to zone 8.

Use it in groups beside ponds, streams, or damp woodland paths. It also suits bog gardens and borders that stay moist. A single clump can serve as a focal point. Sources report few major pest or disease problems. RHS warns that slugs may harm young leaves. Chicago reports deer resistance, though its slug account differs. Cut back the leaves as they yellow in autumn. Divide plants in spring, or sow seed then in a cold frame.
