Taxonomy

Sparganium erectum, also known as the simplestem bur-reed or branched bur-reed, is a perennial plant species belonging to the genus Sparganium. This vigorous, erect, semi-evergreen, marginal aquatic perennial features keeled, linear leaves that can grow up to 1.5m long. During the summer, it produces branched stems with separate clusters of greenish-white male and female flowers, which are followed by prickly green and then brown fruit measuring approximately 1cm across. This plant is native to northern temperate regions and is a super rare houseplant that requires regular watering and abundant sunlight. It is recommended to keep it within 3 feet of a window for optimal growth. Additionally, the larvae of the moth Plusia festucae feed on Sparganium erectum.
