Viburnum lantana aka Mealytree

Taxonomy

Viburnum lantana, also known as wayfarer or wayfaring tree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 5 meters tall. It is native to central, southern and western Europe, northwest Africa, and southwestern Asia. The leaves are opposite, oval to lanceolate, and have a finely serrated margin. The flowers are small and creamy-white, produced in dense cymes in early summer and pollinated by insects. The fruit is an oblong drupe that turns from green to red to black at full maturity, containing a single seed that is dispersed by birds. The plant is common along waysides and has naturalized in the northeastern United States. It is a parent of Viburnum rhytidophylloides. Wayfaring Tree Viburnum is also a rare houseplant that prefers long-lasting, direct light and well-draining soil. It needs regular watering and should not require added fertilizers if repotted when it doubles in size.

How to care for Mealytree

Difficulty

If you're looking for a plant that offers a moderate level of challenge, Mealytree is a great choice to test your gardening skills.

Water

Mealytree should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Mealytree loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Mealytree prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Mealytree is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Fertilizer

The Mealytree is characterized by its slow growth and doesn't need fertilization in addition to its potting soil. By renewing the soil in its pot once a year, it should have enough nutrition. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not from any fertilizers.

Growth-pattern

New growth will sprout from the top of the Mealytree as it grows vertically.

Region of origin

Mealytree’s native range is Europe, including Britain, from Belgium south and east to Spain, Greece and W. Asia.
