Zea mays aka Corn

Taxonomy

Maize (Zea mays subsp. mays) is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. It is a warm weather crop and should not be planted until the soil reaches 60° F. The plant is typically 3-13 m (10-43 ft) in height, with alternating leaves arising from 20 internodes of 18 cm (7 in) length. The leaves are generally 9 cm (3 1⁄2 in) in width and 120 cm (3 ft 11 in) in length, while the stem produces pollen inflorescences (or "tassels") and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears. Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, and total world production for 2021 was 1.2 billion tonnes. For adequate pollination, maize should be planted in several rows to form a square or on hills with several plants in a circle, and some sweet corn varieties may be adversely affected by cross pollination. Mechanical removal is often the most desirable method for clearing maize, and can be accomplished with sharp hoes, shovels, or hand pulling.

Lighting

Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold.
