Zygopetalum

Zygopetalum (abbreviated Z.) is a small genus of the orchid family (Orchidaceae), consisting of fourteen recognized species. These evergreen, epiphytic orchids have shiny, upright, lance-shaped leaves and produce long-lasting sprays of fragrant flowers on tall stems. The flowers have five green petals with varying amounts of dark red spotting, and a broad purple lip with a white edge. The name Zygopetalum comes from the Greek words for "yoke" and "petal or sepal," referring to the way the flower segments are held together by the callus. These New World orchids are mainly found in tropical South America. While the number of species is small, there are numerous Zygopetalum hybrids available. Zygopetalums are known for their intense fragrance, which can fill an entire room. The blooms of Zygopetalum orchids are typically green and brown striped or speckled, with a velvety white lip marked with purple, indigo, maroon, or fuchsia. The leaves are long, glossy, and strap-like, reaching heights of nearly two feet. The inflorescence, which emerges from the base of the pseudobulb, often grows even taller than the leaves themselves.
