Aotus is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae, placed in the tribe Mirbelieae and subfamily Faboideae. Commonly known as golden peas, these woody evergreen shrubs produce distinctive small yellow flowers and are endemic to Australia, occurring in all states except the Northern Territory. The genus comprises approximately 15 species.

Plants are woody shrubs with terete stems. Their leaves are simple, arranged oppositely, alternately, or in whorls of three or more, with recurved or revolute margins and no stipules. Flowers are borne axillary, either solitary or in clusters, rarely in short terminal racemes. The calyx has five teeth, with the upper two broader and partially fused into an upper lip. Petals are long-clawed: the standard is roughly circular with a slightly notched apex and longer than the other petals, the wings are narrow-oblong, and the keel is incurved. Stamens are free with dorsifixed anthers. The ovary is hairy and shortly stalked, containing two ovules. The fruit is an ovate to obovate pod, flat or turgid, usually hairy, splitting into two valves and containing two kidney-shaped seeds without an aril.

Some species, notably Aotus ericoides, are widely cultivated by gardeners for their ornamental value. The genus includes notable species such as Aotus ericoides, Aotus procumbens, Aotus lanigera, and Aotus subspinescens.

Distribution

Aotus is endemic to Australia, occurring in all states except the Northern Territory. The approximately 15 species are distributed across temperate and subtropical regions of the continent, from coastal heathlands to inland woodlands.

Cultivation

Some Aotus species, particularly Aotus ericoides, are widely cultivated by gardeners for their ornamental value, prized for their yellow pea-like flowers and evergreen foliage. They are woody shrubs suited to well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.

Taxonomy

Aotus belongs to the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae, within the tribe Mirbelieae — a group of Australian endemic legumes. The genus comprises approximately 15 species (GBIF records 10 descendants; Wikipedia lists 14 accepted species with about a dozen of unresolved status). GBIF does not provide authorship for the genus name; individual species were described by authorities including Meissner, Bentham, G.Don, and Crisp. The genus is closely related to other Australian "egg-and-bacon pea" genera such as Pultenaea and Dillwynia.
