Arethusa is a monotypic genus in the family Orchidaceae (order Asparagales), containing a single species: Arethusa bulbosa L., commonly known as the dragon's mouth orchid. It is a small terrestrial orchid native to eastern North America, reaching about 15 cm in height.

The plant bears a single large, showy pink terminal flower. The lip is prominent and decorated with white and yellow fringed crests, making it one of the most visually distinctive orchids of the northern peatlands. Its preferred habitats are bogs, swamps, and other wet, acidic lowlands where sphagnum moss predominates.

The genus is abbreviated Aret in horticultural trade journals. The name Arethusa honours Arethusa, a naiad of Greek mythology — a freshwater nymph associated with springs and streams, an allusion to the waterlogged habitats this orchid frequents.

Arethusa bulbosa is considered rare across much of its range, from Manitoba east to Newfoundland and south to Virginia, with isolated populations in northern Saskatchewan and the Carolinas. Habitat loss through bog drainage and peat extraction has made it a conservation concern in several jurisdictions.

Etymology

The genus name Arethusa derives from Greek mythology: Arethusa was a naiad, a freshwater nymph, said to preside over springs and streams. The name alludes to the waterlogged bogs and swamps that this orchid calls home.

Distribution

Arethusa bulbosa ranges across eastern North America, from Manitoba east to Newfoundland and Saint Pierre and Miquelon, south to Virginia. Isolated populations also occur in northern Saskatchewan and in the Carolinas. The species is restricted to bogs, swamps, and wet lowlands throughout this range.

Ecology

This orchid is a specialist of acidic, waterlogged habitats — sphagnum bogs, swamps, and other wet lowlands. Its strict dependence on these conditions makes it vulnerable to any drainage or disturbance of peatland ecosystems.

Conservation

Arethusa bulbosa is considered rare throughout its range. Habitat loss through bog drainage, peat extraction, and land conversion has reduced populations across eastern North America. It is listed as threatened, endangered, or of special concern in several US states and Canadian provinces.
