Argyrolobium, commonly known as silverpods, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae (the legume or pea family), subfamily Faboideae, tribe Genisteae. The genus was described by Ecklon & Zeyher and published in Enumeratio Plantarum Africae Australis in 1836. GBIF recognises approximately 123 accepted species.
Members of the genus are predominantly herbaceous perennials or small shrubs characterised by trifoliate leaves and the pea-type (papilionaceous) flowers typical of the subfamily Faboideae. The common name "silverpods" alludes to the silvery-hairy seed pods and foliage that distinguish many species in the group. The genus is organised into several sections — including Amplexicaule, Lunare, Transvaalense, and Polyphyllum — reflecting morphological and biogeographic groupings, particularly among the South African species.
Argyrolobium has a broad distribution centred on sub-Saharan Africa, with additional representatives in northern Africa, the Mediterranean and southern Europe, western Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. The majority of species diversity is found in southern Africa, where the genus occupies a range of habitats from fynbos and grassland to rocky slopes. Notable members include A. zanonii, the most widespread European representative, occurring around the western Mediterranean including the Iberian Peninsula and Catalonia; A. fischeri from tropical East Africa; and A. saharae from the Saharan region.
Etymology
The name Argyrolobium derives from the Greek argyros (ἄργυρος, "silver") and lobion (λόβιον, "small pod" or "little lobe"), a reference to the silky silver-hairy pods characteristic of many species in the genus. The common English name "silverpods" reflects the same morphological feature.
Distribution
Argyrolobium is centred on Africa, with the greatest species diversity in southern Africa; additional species occur in tropical Africa, the Sahara, northern Africa, the Mediterranean basin and southern Europe (notably A. zanonii in Iberia and the western Mediterranean), western Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.
Taxonomy Notes
The genus Argyrolobium Eckl. & Zeyh. was established in 1836 in Enumeratio Plantarum Africae Australis (p. 184). It is placed in tribe Genisteae, subfamily Faboideae, family Fabaceae, order Fabales. GBIF recognises approximately 123 accepted species and several infrageneric sections. Phylogenetic work on the South African species has been used to refine section boundaries and relationships within the genus.
